Digital Twins — Conceptual and Active Twins

Scope and source boundary
A digital twin binds asset identity to telemetry, temporal state and authorized control rather than a standalone dashboard.
A digital twin is a semantically identified operational representation connected to observations, time, context and decisions. The book distinguishes asset identity, telemetry ingestion, state updates, derived projections and authorized actuation. A dashboard or a stream of sensor values alone does not constitute an operationally trustworthy twin.
Engineering rules
- Define which physical asset and context each twin instance represents.
- Distinguish incoming measurements from asserted facts and simulated states.
- Record timestamps, provenance and uncertainty of state changes.
- Require governance and human oversight before effectful actuation.
